Tindall’s Cottage in Berry was once the home of the town’s first mayor, James Wilson. But while it started its life in 1862 as the pride of the small village on the south coast of New South Wales, when the current owners bought the cottage over a century later in 2019 it was a little worse for wear. Its peachy yellow exterior was blotchy, the green roof was flaking, and the house was in desperate need of some TLC. With architect plans in hand for a contemporary extension, the clients called in colour consultant and interior designer Asha Ardill from South Coast Colour to help transform the cottage into a classic yet contemporary family home.
“In my mind’s eye I could see the misty clouds and washed-out greens from a Victorian landscape painting and set out to replicate this… The client, like me, loves colour and we wanted to evoke a mood and sense of history while also having welcoming colours for a family home,” says Asha, who infused some of her own interior style she calls Country Boho into the design. She shares some good advice for those wanting to renovate a heritage home. “Layering is key and use colours that are active and fun. Looking at the art of the period can help to formulate your colour palette. (sic).
