The wall colour just had to be this particular gre

The wall colour just had to be this particular green. And the art for the wall had to be this particular piece of the client’s. Why? Because they belong here & together, connected to the view of the South Coast wetlands.

Strikingly beautiful, the artwork is by Australian painter and ceramicist the late Gerard Havekes, who was also the father of renown florist Saskia Havekes @grandiflora_sydney

My approach when designing is to set the scene - it’s how I visualise a space that doesn’t exist yet. Coming from a background in the film industry I ask myself many of the same questions that I would for a film scene - who is here, what are they doing, how are they feeling - all leading to the crucial question: What is placed here that makes all of this come true?

A casual snap from my client’s newly painted and curated sitting room. It can be truly difficult to execute a designated TV room that houses but doesn’t feature the television. Though, this is a trick shot as it is on the opposite wall - but with the inky deep blue walls and well-loved cosy brown sofas inviting you to sink in and relax, I’d be more inclined to garden gaze and enjoy the eclectic art pieces. Pass me a cuppa and I’m in for the afternoon!

Can you feel the joy leaping between the wall colours, interior decor and exterior garden views? It’s no coincidence that these colours feel poised not posed.

The wall colours connect to details in the decor, art and furniture, whilst the overall combination both frames and compliments the garden scenery.

What I have enjoyed the most about this project has been the challenge to use colour choices for the walls that will in turn act as framed views themselves as you see through to the next space. Colour not only brings the outside in - but the inside throughout.

Bold and balanced colours sing their way through my client’s newly renovated country estate, located in the rolling green hills of Cambewarra on the NSW South Coast. These sneak peaks were just too exciting to not share right now!

Eclectic, joyful and harmonious my colour scheme lifts small artistic details and magnifies them to their max.

Open plan living and internal glass doors simultaneously frame and contain the strongest hues, whilst allowing them to connect to curated items in following rooms.

I love the colours and sunlight of local artist @k

I love the colours and sunlight of local artist @kristaldelvillarart so much that my husband gifted me this limited edition print for Christmas. Often with Kristal’s work I swoon over the rolling green hills and sunset colour palette so I admit this shadowy scene threw me for a while deciding how best to do it justice.

At the framers it became clear - embrace the dark vibes, live in the shadows and create a contained drama - for me decorating is all about evoking mood and feelings. So I removed the surrounding white matte that was too bright for my purpose and chose a detailed, ornate frame to tie in with the line work of the painting.

I think it is successful in channeling gothic storytelling vibes so now every time I pass it in my studio I am transported deep into the scene.

For me this is a perfect example of not defaulting to the way you see things done by others, but take a step back to find a way that speaks to you.

That is why for many years I worked in the film industry, where the things that set the tone of a film are the same design elements that can set the tone of your home.
